Network Software Audit

FrontRange Discovery's unique hybrid Software Recognition Engine ensures the most accurate software audit across the entire multi-platform network.

Whether you’re embarking on a full Software Asset Management (SAM) initiative, assessing your software license compliance position or preparing for an OS migration, FrontRange Discovery's software inventory gives you the insight necessary to plan effectively and eliminate unnecessary costs.

The best software recognition

FrontRange Discovery employs a four-phase recognition engine for software audits, taking advantage of multiple recognition technologies to ensure that you get the most accurate results with the least effort.

In independent tests, FrontRange Discovery consistently recognized more applications on the network, minimizing the administrative effort associated with managing unrecognized software

Software audit information

For each application recorded in the Discovery asset repository, the following information is available:

  • Manufacturer
  • Application title
  • Version number / Patch Status
  • Total volume of installations found (drill down to individual installations)

A full audit history is also available, showing all updates and changes made to software on an individual PC.

Tracking software usage

Not to be confused with software metering, FrontRange Discovery has the ability to track application usage. This enables managers to create an accurate view of software use, helping to identify redundant applications and redistribute programs to more needy users.

Tracking Virtual Applications

FrontRange Discovery won’t just audit applications that physically reside on PCs and Servers, it will also perform a complete inventory of all virtual applications on the network. For more information, see Virtual Inventory.

Thin Client Applications

For organizations that have invested in thin client technology, FrontRange Discovery audits and reports on applications published using Citrix XenApp 4.5 and 5.0 (Advanced, Enterprise and Platinum editions) servers.

Greynet Software Reporting

In addition to providing a complete software audit, Discovery also helps organizations maintain a healthy network by highlighting the presence of potentially dangerous or unwanted applications on users’ PCs. These software programs can pose a threat to the organization in the form of:

  • Security RisksApplications such as Peer-to-Peer file sharing, remote access and password cracking tools
  • ProductivityGames, gambling software and adult-related applications can indicate that some users are not working to their full productivity.

FrontRange Discovery’s database of ‘Greynets’ can help administrators pinpoint unwanted files on the network, or allow organizations to create their own lists of unacceptable applications which require administrator attention.
